The Fantastic Library’s Golden Unicorn Award for best fantasy movie in 2015
In the movie category, the winner of the 2015 Golden Unicorn Award for best fantasy movie is… Song of the Sea!
Song of the Sea is a spectacularly beautiful and thrilling Irish animation movie, directed by Tomm Moore and created by Cartoon Saloon, the studio which created “The Secret of Kells”. The movie’s plot takes place in the late 80’s of the twentieth century, and tells the story of Saoirse and Ben, the last of the Selkies – mythical creatures which can transform from seal to human form – who embark on a journey home.
The movie is created with classic animation, which is amazingly beautiful, and fits wonderfully with the Irish roots of the story. But the unique art does not stand on its own. It accompanies a story full of emotion, conflict and magic, taken directly from Irish lore. The movie also shows great respect to Irish music, with a wonderful soundtrack, composed by Bruno Coulais and Irish band Kíla, with songs performed by Irish singer Lisa Hannigan.
True, the movie did not get a commercial distribution in Israel, but it will stay in the hearts and dreams of those who did watch it, long after other of this year’s genre movies will be forgotten.
